FGD (Deposit Guarantee Fund in Banking Establishments)

Institution created by the Bank of Spain and credit institutions in 1977, whose purpose is to ensure and protect, up to a certain amount, the balances and deposits of customers of financial institutions in the event of possible insolvency or bankruptcy. It is funded by equal contributions from these institutions and has saved some banks in crisis situations. Currently, and since 2011, it guarantees deposits in cash up to a limit of 100,000 euros per account holder, regardless of the number and type of deposits they have in the institution.
